Sheehy Subaru of Fredericksburg Donates $20,000 to Support NVCT's Conservation Efforts. - Gregory M
For over 25 years, NVCT has been working to protect and expand the Crows Nest Natural Area Preserve, a large wilderness area bordering the Potomac River on the southern edge of Stafford County, Virginia, about 30 minutes from Sheehys Fredericksburg location. Simply put, Crow's Nest is a beautiful place and is considered highly significant from numerous conservation standpoints. Virtually the entire Crow's Nest Peninsula is forested with an impressive, mature stand of mixed hardwoods which are becoming increasingly rare across Virginia. The preserve supports 895 acres of tidal and non-tidal wetlands, 23 miles of stream, riparian and wetland buffer and 2,310 acres of mature hardwood forest. Crows Nest provides critical habitat for bald eagles, rare plants, 25 species of waterfowl, dozens of species of fish, many neo-tropical migratory birds and it is home to one of the largest great blue heron nesting sites in the mid-Atlantic. The protection of Crow's Nest is arguably one of Virginia's highest land conservation achievements, becoming a reality in 2008 with the first acquisition of 1,762 acres. In 2009, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and Stafford County added another 1,110 acres. NVCT dedicated our Potomac Creek Heronry parcel as an addition to the preserve in 2018 and our Potomac Hills parcel in 2020, bringing the total area of Virginia's 54th state natural area preserve to 3,056 acres. But the job isnt finished. In partnership with the Department of Conservation and Recreation NVCT continues to work to secure vulnerable outlying parcels and add them to Crows Nest where they will be forever preserved. Earlier this year, we had the opportunity to host our friends from Sheehy Subaru on a short hike of the Potomac Creek Herony parcel that NVCT protected and added to Crows Nest just a few years ago. Its a special spot said, NVCTs Greg Meyer, and we are delighted that Sheehy Subaru of Fredericksburg is committed to helping us protect places like this. Their generous commitment will help preserve our region's natural beauty for generations to come."

Animal Sanctuary's Call for Help Answered - Will L
Our experience with Sheehy Subaru of Fredericksburg was a bit different than most, but I think it reflects the character of the dealership and particularly the General Manager, Matt Wright. I help run a farmed animal sanctuary in Louisa County. We provide a forever home for rescued farmed animals coming from tough circumstances, including abuse and neglect. We were in desperate need of a farm truck to help with our work, including hauling supplies to the property like bedding, hay, and lumber, as well as moving things around the property like wood, gravel, etc. On a whim, we emailed about 20 dealers and fleet companies inquiring about really cheap vehicles we could afford (we are a nonprofit). Only two responded and only one, Matt Wright, offered to help. Matt said he had something that would work for us and in a matter of days, he pulled it all together and arranged a donation of a used pickup truck in excellent shape to our sanctuary. Despite being busy, he kept in close contact, handled all of the paperwork, and even had the truck cleaned, inspected, and filled with gas. We didnt expect much from our emails but the universe connected us with Matt and Sheehy Subaru of Fredericksburg and we are eternally grateful. Sanctuary work is hard work and you often see the worst of humanity in what we inflict on animals. Matt and the whole dealership (including everyone else we interacted with) helped restore some faith that there are good, decent people out there. Matt asked for nothing in return and genuinely helped because he cared. I think that says a lot about this dealership.
Virtual Cooking Classes Increase Heart-Healthy Habits in Latina Mothers - Kimberly J
In 2017, the American Heart Association (AHA) teamed up with the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington to connect over 1,300 DC area residents to Simple Cooking with Heart. The curriculum teaches participants cooking skills and instills confidence in the kitchen through the lens of improving heart health with better nutrition. Before COVID-19, in-person classes were primarily facilitated in Washington, D.C. as part of the Districts SNAP-Education program. Now, Simple Cooking with Heart has expanded to Maryland and Virginia. The classes have been hosted virtually in light of the pandemic. Trained chef and certified integrated nutrition and health coach Veronica Velez-Burgess has always been enthusiastic about educating her local community on simple lifestyle changes to eat smart and live a longer, healthier life. As a YMCA culinary and nutrition educator, she brings her knowledge and passion for creating nutritious, affordable and simple meals to Latina mothers in Montgomery County participating in the Spanish-speaking version of the Simple Cooking with Heart curriculum. The virtual courses use AHA heart-healthy recipes while sharing small lifestyle changes to incorporate more fruits and vegetables, substitute sugary beverages for water and engage children in healthy eating. Veronica felt that the program, left participants feeling confident in their ability to make lifestyle changes that led to noticeable health benefits for themselves and their families. Oftentimes, participants would share sentiments like: It is doable! I dont have to change my life dramatically or stop eating the foods that I love. I can make these small changes. I can do it with my budget. Developing trust, encouraging community support among participants and having honest and transparent conversations about the reality of healthy eating were imperative to the programs success. They really shared a lot about their own needs and challenges, Veronica said. We had really rich conversations about everything relating to the recipes, not just how you prepare them. The group discussed how to manage high blood pressure with heart-healthy meals by limiting saturated fat, sodium and added sugars, and they shared grocery shopping recommendations for healthy eating on a budget. The AHA takes budget into consideration in their recipes. They really think about what it costs to make these recipes, and for this group of participants, they felt it was manageable, Veronica shared one of the reasons she loves teaching the Simple Cooking with Heart curriculum. These recipes work because they are delicious and simple to prepare. Over 8 weeks, Veronica saw participants using the AHA recipes more frequently, eating more fruits and vegetables, cooking with their children and introducing new foods to their families. One participant shared how these classes and small lifestyle changes made a big impact on her overall health. She previously used the oven as storage and tended to deep fry most of the food she made for herself and her family. She now roasts dishes and avoids frying. When her kids are hungry, they make fruit smoothies together, Veronica shared the participants testimonial. She used to feel a lot of pressure around her heart and was constantly tired. By making changes, she feels better, has more energy and the pressure around her heart is gone. Her doctor was very happy with the changes because she lost 15 pounds, her blood pressure is lower and her general health has improved. In addition to improving their health, participants also saw improvements in their childrens health. Many participants shared their children were at an increased risk for developing diabetes and obesity. By getting their children involved in the Simple Cooking with Heart classes, they became more open to trying new foods and learned skills to live a long and healthy life. Veronica emphasized the importance of the YMCA Youth and Family Services team. Maria Hernandez and Freddy Climaco identified the participants and encouraged them to engage with the program in a very meaningful and sustainable way. They were instrumental in making the groups participation a success, she said. Interested in trying delicious, simple and quick recipes that are good for your heart and your wallet? All Sheehy dealerships throughout the Mid-Atlantic will lead various initiatives in support of the AHA in the month of June, including virtual and in-person events to engage the community with ways to stay heart healthy.
